Federico Faggin invented the first microprocessor. Half a century of building machines that process information — and then he spent the second half of his life arguing that this was never “the thing” itself.

A chip can hold every fact about pain. Weight it, model it, run it a billion times a second. It will still never feel/experience a thing. Not because the chip is too slow. Because information and experience are not the same category of thing, however much we’ve trained ourselves to think they are.

We’re taught, early and constantly, that if you can describe something completely, you’ve captured it. Write the report, make the case, put it in the deck — translate the felt thing into words until the words feel like the thing. You get so good at the translation that you stop noticing the gap. But describe every neuron firing when someone tastes coffee, every signal, every exchange, and the taste itself is still not there. Not missing because the data ran out. Missing in principle.

He calls this a wall.

I think of it when I come back to Janwaar. Not the report I could write — how many trees this monsoon, how many kids now in class or at the skatepark. The report comes after. What comes first is smaller and harder to hold: the dust still hanging where the car stopped, a face mid-air off a ramp, the exact second before I know what any of it means.

That’s the part that can’t be transmitted. I can describe the dust to you. I can’t hand you the fact of standing in it.

Faggin’s answer is that we have the order backwards. Consciousness doesn’t rise out of the brain the way heat rises out of a fire. It’s what’s there first, and the brain is only the shape it moves through — the way a river isn’t made by its banks. It just finds them.

I don’t know if that survives physics. But I know it survives Janwaar. Nothing that actually changed a child’s life there arrived as a plan first. I didn’t wait for a strategy to plant four hundred trees. The plan, when it came, was already late — it was just catching up to something that had already happened, quietly, in my chest.

Faggin has a word for the thing the chip will never hold: qualia. Not information about red, but red itself. Not the readout of pain, but the ache. He doesn’t call it a byproduct of enough neurons firing in the right order. He calls it fundamental — the way mass is fundamental, or charge. Not built up from smaller parts. Not waiting at the end of a long enough calculation.

That’s why no chip gets there no matter how good it gets. It isn’t a matter of more processing power, more data, a finer model of the dust. Qualia don’t sit downstream of information. They’re the other side of it — the side no amount of description can cross into from outside.

Standing in the dust, I’m not collecting information about the moment. I am the moment, briefly. That’s the part Faggin says physics still can’t reach. That’s the part Janwaar keeps handing me anyway.

Maybe that’s the whole use of experience — it doesn’t wait for the explanation. It just goes first.
